What are Fissure Sealants?

Coatings for Your Teeth that Prevent Tooth Decay

Have you ever wondered if you could coat teeth to protect them from tooth decay? In fact you can, and it is an effective and affordable preventative measure in reducing cavities in both children and adults.

Fissure sealants are a thin plastic coating which is applied to the biting surfaces of the back molars. These back teeth typically have deep fissures/grooves which collect bacteria and food particles. As these grooves are so thin, narrow and deep, it is often very difficult to keep them clean even with good brushing. The benefit of sealing these grooves early is the prevention of tooth decay from forming. In fact, studies have shown fissure sealants to be one of the most effective methods in reducing tooth decay, even more than fluorideCochrane Review.

What can I expect when I have Fissure Sealants placed?

Fissure sealants are placed painlessly and without the need for numbing. Your teeth are thoroughly cleaned before the sealant is placed in a gel form before being set with a light – almost like having nail polished placed. The procedure is over in a few minutes and you can eat and drink straight away.

Fissure sealants are recommended for all children as soon as the molars come through – typically around the ages of 6 to 12. The earlier the seals are placed, the more protection they provide as kids typically have trouble cleaning their back teeth thoroughly. Adults can have fissure sealants placed as well.

Most children and adults have 8 molars which require sealing. An expected fee for sealing is around $64 – $72 per tooth – much cheaper, simpler and less painful than having fillings placed to fix up damaged teeth.
