What is Twilight Sedation/Sleep Dentistry?
Twilight sedation is a combination of medicines which help you reduce anxiety, pain and discomfort during your dental procedure. You typically won’t remember the procedure or the short period of time following it, though you will feel a little euphoric.
Patients under Twilight Sedation are kept in a constant state of drowsy relaxation during their procedure . It is common for patients to fall into a light sleep during this type of anesthesia.
Some patients have no memory while under twilight sedation, while others may recall vivid dreams following their procedures. You should not feel pain, however, during this anaesthetic, because the area to be operated on will always be numbed.
For your safety, your sedation is constantly monitored by a medical anaesthetist specialist registered with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA). Your vital signs are continuously monitored with hospital level anaethesiology and monitoring equipment.
Unlike full general anaesthesia (going to hospital for your procedure with full unconsciousness, paralysis and artificial ventilation), a breathing tube is not required. Patients are fully able to breath on their own meaning a quicker recovery, with patients often feeling much better than after a general anaesthetic.
