Chronic Headaches or Jaw Pain
Studies indicate that 12-15% of the population suffers from regular headaches or migraines. Often these symptoms can be debilitating and be severe enough to seek medical attention through a general practitioner or a neurologist.
Apart from avoiding triggers and resting in a dark rooms, acute medication is normally prescribed as a last resort. These medications can include:
- Aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID)
- Ergotamine – regulates blood flow to the brain
- Anti-nausea or anti-depressant drugs (e.g. domperidone, metoclopramide, prochlorperazine)
- Triptans (e.g. sumatriptan, naratriptan, zolmitriptan)
While seeing a neurologist should always be the first in identifying a cause, we see many patients who have seen multiple doctors and specialists and have had a number MRI and CT scans taken to identify a cause. These scans often can up as normal or inconclusive.
We also see a number of patients who are seeking an alternative to migraine medication which can cause side effects such as nausea or sleepiness.

What is the NTI?
The NTI-tss (Nociceptive Trigeminal Inhibition-Tension Suppression System) is a device approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the prevention and treatment of:
- tension-type headaches
- pain caused by temporomandibular disorders (TMDs)
- occlusal trauma
It is a simple plastic appliance which is worn over the front upper or lower teeth and was originally designed by a sufferer of debilitating migraines. The NTI can be worn during the day or at night and is backed by over 20 years of clinical evidence.
How does the NTI work?
The NTI reduces tooth clenching, grinding and pressure on the temporomandibular joint. In doing so, this leads to a reduction in hyperactivity of the trigeminal nerve, often triggering typical migraine events.
The objective of the NTI-TSS is to relax the muscles involved in clenching and mastication, thus diminishing the chances for migraines and tension headaches to develop.
